Abstract

Kerala, often regarded as a model state for socio-economic development in India, is home to a diverse Muslim population that includes marginalized communities such as the Ossan, Pusalan, and Thangals. Despite the state's progress in education, health, and gender equality, these communities continue to face socio-economic and political exclusion. This essay explores their historical marginalization, shaped by caste-like structures, colonial policies, and systemic discrimination. It examines the impact of post-independence land reforms, educational movements, and political representation on their socio-economic status. Furthermore, the essay highlights the role of grassroots movements and NGOs in mobilizing and empowering these communities, focusing on initiatives related to education, economic inclusion, and social justice. Through an analysis of these efforts, this study underscores the ongoing challenges and the need for targeted interventions to achieve true equity and inclusion for marginalized Muslim communities in Kerala.
