One of the major contributors of today’s global burden of diseases is disability associated with mental illness. There are various types of disabilities in which mental illness makes up a sizeable chunk. The issues faced within the families of persons with mental illness is increased by the burden exerted upon them by society. The study is a qualitative study in which case study method is used to gather relevant data. The assessment of disability needs to be multidisciplinary and comprehensive and in this sociological study of people with mental illness, two case studies are highlighted which point to the well-being issues that they currently face in society as well as within their own family circle. One of these cases are from Aizawl district and one from Lunglei district, Mizoram. The in-depth study covers the coping mechanisms used by their family members to help their mentally ill family members amidst difficulties. It also studies disability from the point of different models of disability. It emphasises that all the participants did not have access to any professional help to cope with their problems and instead rely solely on the limited help and support of their own family members.
